Cosmetic Treatments:

The effects of time, heredity and the environment will cause your skin to change.  Sunlight, pollution, stress and even smoking all can have a damaging effect on the skin that becomes more noticeable over time.

The following are some of the most popular cosmetic procedures currently offered.  All of these procedures are performed by Dr. Salob herself.

Chemical Peels: Glycolic and Salicylic acid chemical peels are done in the office, and patients can continue their normal activities and routines afterwards.  The skin will feel smoother and more hydrated and fine lines and age spots will be less noticeable.  Dr. Salob recommends a series of six peels, done every two weeks, for maximal improvement.  TCA peels penetrate deeper to remove the surface layers of the skin.  After 7 to 10 days your skin will appear fresher and more radiant.

BOTOX® Cosmetic: BOTOX® Cosmetic is used to treat the frown lines between the eyes, forehead furrows and wrinkles, and crow's feet.  These lines are formed by repeated contraction of the muscles underlying the skin.  By relaxing these muscles, BOTOX® Cosmetic causes these wrinkles to soften and often disappear.  BOTOX® Cosmetic can also be used to gently lift the eyebrows and improve lines around the lips and on the neck.  BOTOX® is even used to treat excessive sweating under the arms and on the palms (hyperhidrosis).  Treatments are quick, non-invasive, and require no down time.  BOTOX® Cosmetic injections have become the single most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure in the United States.

Restylane®, Perlane® and Juvederm®: These are smooth, non-animal, clear biodegradable gels made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin and joints.  Facial lines and wrinkles are caused by a gradual breakdown of the body's collagen and elastin fibers in the skin.  Squinting, frowning and smiling also inflict stress on the underlying collagen, and accelerate the formation of these furrows.  These products are injected into the skin in tiny amounts with a very fine needle.  They help to restore volume and smooth away facial wrinkles or folds.  This non-surgical correction is performed in the office and results are seen immediately.  Results typically last 6-9 months.

Radiesse®: Radiesse® is the newest non-surgical contouring filler.  It is formulated from calcium hydroxyapatite microspheres that create a foundation for the body's own collagen to grow on.  Radiesse's® unique composition delivers longer lasting results for treatment of deep furrows or lines.  Typical results last 12-18 months.

Laser Treatments: The Starlux Pulsed Light System by Palomar utilizes specialized handpieces to filter in the optimal bands of the light spectrum for specific treatments.  Treatments are quick, safe, and associated with little or no downtime.

Photofacials: Intense Pulsed Light (so called IPL or Photofacial) treatments can safely treat sun damage, brown spots, visible blood vessels (or telangiectasias) and rosacea, while improving skin tone.  The laser leaves the upper layers of the skin intact, so you can resume your usual daily routine with minimal interruption.

Permanent Hair Reduction: Unwanted or excess body hair is a common concern of many women and men.  During treatment sessions, pulses of light are directly absorbed by the melanin pigment in the hair.  When the energy absorbed by the melanin is transferred to the cells in the hair follicle, the follicle is destroyed.  Several treatment sessions are required to achieve the desired reduction in hair growth.

Photodynamic Therapy: I am very excited about this addition to our practice.  Photodynamic therapy is a new state of the art treatment for actinic keratoses (so-called "pre-cancerous" spots), sun damage and acne.  It is 60-70% more effective than IPL alone in treating broken blood vessels, brown spots, and improving pore size.

Sun Damage and Actinic Keratoses: During a session of photodynamic therapy, a photosensitizing chemical called Levulan is applied to the skin 60-90 minutes prior to treatment with the IPL.  For actinic keratoses, the chemical is taken up by the atypical cells, and when it is activated by the IPL, the pre-cancerous cells are destroyed.  There is a nice cosmetic benefit as well -- the treatment improves those sun spots and broken blood vessels that are also caused by too much sun exposure over the years.  This treatment may be used even if you do not have actinic keratoses -- studies have shown that it accelerates the results of IPL photofacials, resulting in the need for fewer treatments.

Acne: Photodynamic therapy is an exciting new addition to standard acne treatments.  The treatment both kills the P. acnes bacteria in the pores that are involved in the development of pimples and cysts, and inhibits sebaceous gland activity.  In conjunction with a skin care program of products selected for your individual needs, photodynamic therapy can be a useful addition to acne treatments.  Treatments are administered every other week, and a series of 4-5 treatments is recommended for optimal results.

Sclerotherapy: Despite the advances in laser treatments, sclerotherapy is still considered the treatment of choice to eradicate small leg veins.  In this procedure veins are injected with a sclerosing agent which causes them to collapse and fade from view.  Two to four treatments may be required, with improvement noted after each session.
